Gentle Skincare for Sensitive Skin
If your skin stings, turns red or feels tight when you try something new, you're not alone. Skin that reacts easily usually does best with fewer products, fewer strong actives and a focus on comfort.
Below is a short, gentle routine and a few tips for introducing new products slowly.
Why some skin reacts easily
Sensitive skin often has a stressed or weakened skin barrier, the outer layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it's weakened, skin can lose water faster and react more to ingredients and weather.
Common triggers include harsh cleansers, over-exfoliating, fragrance and essential oils, layering too many active ingredients, hot water, wind and cold.
A gentle routine that supports the barrier, keeps skin hydrated and protects it from the sun gives it the best chance to stay calm and comfortable.
If your skin is persistently red, itchy, painful or flaky, or you have a diagnosed skin condition, check with a dermatologist or healthcare provider. Skincare products are not a substitute for medical care.
Gentle products we recommend
Reiland Skin Barrier Drops – $40.00
A lightweight, milky serum with niacinamide, ectoin and jojoba milk, formulated to be gentle and to support the skin barrier and hydration. Start with 2–3 drops once a day.
Reiland Advanced Skin Restore Moisturizer – $69.95
A lightweight moisturizer with ceramides and postbiotics for daily barrier support, made without relying on harsh fragrances. It contains cosmetic botanicals, so patch test first if you know botanicals bother you.
Reiland Claritea Antioxidant Serum – $58.00
A lightweight antioxidant serum with green tea and vitamin E that supports skin comfort and a calmer-looking complexion. Its full ingredient list is published on the product page so you can check it before you buy.
Reiland Radiant Shield SPF 40 Tinted Mineral Sunscreen – $59.95
A 100% mineral, broad-spectrum SPF 40 with 17% non-nano zinc oxide and a sheer tint. Mineral filters are often a good choice for skin that reacts easily. Don't apply it to broken skin.
A simple routine for sensitive skin
Morning (AM)
- Rinse with lukewarm water or use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Skin Barrier Drops.
- Advanced Skin Restore moisturizer.
- Radiant Shield SPF 40.
Evening (PM)
- Mild, fragrance-free cleanser with lukewarm water.
- Claritea Antioxidant Serum or Skin Barrier Drops (start with one serum, not both).
- Advanced Skin Restore moisturizer.
Patch test first: apply a small amount of each new product behind the ear or on the inner forearm once a day for a few days before using it on your face. Add one new product at a time, about a week apart, so you know what your skin is reacting to. Stop using any product that causes stinging, burning or a rash.
Frequently asked questions
How do I patch test a new skincare product?
Apply a small amount to a small area such as behind the ear or the inner forearm once a day for a few days. If there's no redness, itching or stinging, try it on a small area of your face before using it all over. Stop if irritation appears.
What ingredients are usually gentler on sensitive skin?
Barrier-support and hydrating ingredients such as niacinamide, ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid are generally well tolerated. Many people with sensitive skin also prefer mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and avoid fragrance and essential oils.
How many products should I use if my skin is sensitive?
Fewer is usually better. A mild cleanser, one serum, a moisturizer and a mineral sunscreen cover the basics. Introduce new products one at a time.
Should I exfoliate sensitive skin?
Go easy. Over-exfoliating is a common cause of irritation. If you exfoliate at all, choose a gentle product, use it no more than once a week, and skip it whenever your skin feels irritated.
When should I see a dermatologist?
If redness, itching, flaking, bumps or pain are persistent or getting worse, or you think you may have a skin condition, see a dermatologist or healthcare provider. Cosmetic skincare isn't meant to diagnose or treat skin conditions.
